DARIA KAYITESI
SAFE SPACE
In memory of the founder’s late mother, Daria Kayitesi, our inter-religious NGO, DKSS, emerged in response to the daunting challenges faced by individuals across all walks of life living with HIV/AIDS.
We are committed to:
- Providing enhanced free medical services and ensuring strict adherence to ART medication.
- Offering shelter to the homeless, coupled with comprehensive skill development and education for financial empowerment.
- Promoting sexual reproductive health and rights through the training of peer educators.
- Extending psychosocial support, rehabilitation, and counseling services.
Our core mission is to combat the alarming rates of teenage pregnancies and the spread of HIV, exacerbated by factors such as illiteracy, unemployment, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health information. We believe that by providing free medical services and fostering financial empowerment, we can enhance ART adherence and ultimately control the spread of HIV.
Our economic empowerment initiatives span a diverse range of fields, including metalworking, weaving, carpentry, sewing, hairdressing, art and crafts, and more. We aspire to achieve certification in these areas through recognized examining bodies. Operating alongside our hospital, we aim to provide comprehensive medical care to pregnant mothers, teenagers, the physically disabled, visually impaired, survivors of sexual harassment, drug addicts, and those with mental health needs.
Established in February 2020, our organization was born from the founder’s encounters with young adults living with HIV who faced challenges like illiteracy, orphanhood, unemployment, and vulnerability, leading some to contemplate suicide or endure psychologically distressing marriages marked by stigmatization.
Additionally, our founder’s academic and motivational tours revealed that HIV-negative youth also suffered, experiencing depression and stress due to dysfunctional family dynamics and a pervasive sense of isolation. This prompted the need for a dedicated psychosocial support platform.
